Entrepreneurs like to give everything they have to run their businesses, but while this devotion may be admirable, it’s not always healthy. Whether you’re getting a new startup off the ground or you’re managing an established business, you need to take care of your health.

Get Enough Sleep
As much as some entrepreneurs like to brag about working late and not sleeping, it’s not a healthy habit. People should be getting at least seven hours of sleep each night, and that includes hard-working business owners. Without enough sleep, you will eventually get sick and most likely be unable to think clearly, and your business will suffer as a result.

Regular Exercise
Working as a business owner requires long hours of sitting and completing paperwork. This will take a toll on your health before you know it. Talk to your doctor about a regular exercise regimen that you can stick to even if you’re busy with your business. If you don’t think you can stick to longer workouts, at least try to work 30 minutes of physical activity into your daily routine, even if you’re just taking a walk.

Eat a Healthy Diet
Grabbing a quick snack to give you more energy during a long workday is fine once in a while, but you should still stick to a healthy diet when you can. Take some time to prepare and eat balanced meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Trying to live off of office coffee and donuts is not going to cut it, even if you think that’s all you have time for.

See Your Doctor
Finally, don’t hesitate to speak with your doctor about your health, whether you have questions about your diet, exercise regimen, or just schedule regular checkups. And yes, you do have time for an appointment; you can’t work all the time, so schedule appointments as needed to make sure that you’re healthy enough to keep running your business effectively.

The big thing to remember when running a business is that it shouldn’t be your entire life. It might feel that way, and you’ll no doubt run into some business professionals who pride themselves on focusing entirely on their work, but that kind of grind will only make you exhausted and take a toll on your health. In short, take care of yourself. You won’t accomplish anything if you’re too sick to work.
