New business leaders experience the learning curve at different paces depending on their industry and leadership style. The global pandemic leveled the playing field for virtually every leader across every industry. Essentially every business faced the same unknown factors as a result of forced business closures, social distance regulations, reduced workforce, and supply chain issues. Companies had to make very difficult decisions during these uncertain times in order to keep their operations up and to run.

Essential Strategic Planning
Ongoing business development depends on many different factors. Strategic planning has a major influence on the direction of future growth. Business leaders often create a plan that covers both the short-term interests and long-term goals. Short-term objectives may include employee performance evaluation and business development initiatives. Long-term goals may include updates to the infrastructure, expansion plans, and profit margin or price reviews. Some companies hire outside consultants to help them create a vision or mission statement, or other strategic planning resources. Outside consultants are especially helpful during times of hardship, growth, or transition.

Facing Unprecedented Challenges
Although strategic planning is a widespread business practice, it does not cover every situation. Business leaders can use their strategic plan to easily answer everyday questions and as a periodic check to confirm they are on track for a successful quarter. In the face of unexpected change or unusual obstacles, businesses must make tough decisions and may not find specific guidance from their existing strategic plan.

It can be difficult to know when to deviate from the existing plan and pivot into a new way of doing business. Offering a new product or service may be the necessary solution to overcome an unexpected business challenge. During the pandemic, many companies began offering personal protective equipment. This option helped them stay viable in the marketplace and also provided an important service to their community. In less drastic circumstances, pivoting into a new product, service, or approach to business can help refresh the brand. Customers and employees alike are generally open to a reset that propels the business forward.
